Adding captions to video

Assume the sound is off, because most of the time it is.

Caption every video you publish. Keep lines to a handful of words, place them clear of the presenter's face, and check them on a phone where most viewers will actually read them.

The detail, in plain English

Captions serve two audiences at once: people who cannot hear the audio, and the far larger group who simply have not turned it on.

Because the caption text comes from your script, accuracy is free — the work is in line length and placement, not transcription.

What to do, step by step

  1. 1Keep lines shortFive to eight words per line stays readable at phone size.
  2. 2Place them clear of the faceLow in the frame, above any platform interface that overlaps the bottom edge.
  3. 3Read them at small sizeIf you squint, your viewers will scroll past.

Caption rules of thumb
RuleWhy
5–8 words a lineReadable in one glance
Two lines maximumMore covers the frame
High contrastSurvives a bright background
No jargon abbreviationsHarder to read than to hear

A worked example

Worked example (illustration). A hospitality group captions a 45-second booking explainer and finds it works silently in a reception area screen loop, where the audio was never audible anyway.

What to watch out for

  • Captions pinned to the very bottom get hidden by social interface elements.
  • All-capital captions are slower to read, not clearer.
  • Translated captions need the same line-length discipline as the original.

How AutoPersonify does it

AutoPersonify gives you 143 real presenters, scripts in 42 languages and a free tier with no card, so you can make a finished video before you decide on a plan. Paid plans are Starter £49, Growth £149 and Scale £499 a month, all measured in finished video minutes.

Questions people ask

Do I need any video experience?

No. The text comes from your script, so the only judgement calls are line length and placement.

How much does it cost?

Captioning does not change what you pay; plans are measured in finished minutes from Free through to Scale at £499 a month.

Can I edit it afterwards?

Yes. Because captions follow the script, correcting the script and producing again corrects the captions at the same time.
