Charging clients for video revisions

Revisions are where video margin disappears. Priced properly, they become the second most profitable thing you sell.

Include one round of changes in the price, then charge a fixed fee per further round. A change request can carry a price on the review link, so the revised video is delivered once the client has paid.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1Define a roundOne consolidated list of changes, sent once. Three separate emails are three rounds unless you say otherwise.
  2. 2Include the first round in every priceClients expect one. Charging for it reads as mean and costs you the goodwill you need later.
  3. 3Set a revision price per clientEach client can carry its own revision fee, so a £1,200 client is not on the same £45 as a £150 one.
  4. 4Deliver on paymentThe revised version is released when the revision has been paid, which removes the chasing conversation entirely.

A worked example in pounds

Worked example (illustration). A £300 video attracts two extra rounds at £75 and £120. Total collected is £495, the platform fee at 5% is £24.75, and the rendering cost is the same handful of finished minutes.

What to watch out for

  • Write the definition of a round into the package description, not just into the contract.
  • A rewritten brief is new work, not a revision. Price it as a new video.
  • Do not charge for fixing a mistake you made. That is the one round you always absorb.

Questions agencies ask

How long does this take?

A revised video is produced in minutes once the new script is agreed, so the paid round rarely delays delivery by more than an afternoon.

What does it cost?

A revision uses the same finished minutes as the original video. On any paid plan the cost of the extra render is covered by the allowance you already have.

Does the client need an account?

No. The client requests changes on the review link, sees the revision fee there, and pays by card without signing up.
