Freelance vs agency video production

The same tool serves a one-person business and a ten-person agency, but the maths behind each is different.

A freelancer wins on price and speed with a handful of clients on a small plan. An agency wins on volume and retainers with a larger plan and seats for a team. Both keep 95% of platform-collected sales.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1Freelancers: price per video, not per hourHourly billing punishes you for being fast, which is the whole advantage here.
  2. 2Agencies: price per monthRetainers make production volume predictable and make the plan choice obvious.
  3. 3Match the plan to the modelStarter suits a freelancer's handful of clients; Growth or Scale suits an agency running many.
  4. 4Both: keep changes chargeableIt is the single biggest difference between a profitable and an unprofitable month either way.

A worked example in pounds

Worked example (illustration). A freelancer selling eight videos at £180 collects £1,440 on a £49 plan. An agency running eight retainers at £1,200 collects £9,600 on a £149 plan. The freelancer's margin rate is similar; the agency's absolute margin is not.

What to watch out for

  • Freelancers should not promise retainer turnaround they cannot honour during holidays.
  • Agencies need seats and shared brand settings before the fifth client, not after the tenth.
  • Both should keep speculative and client work in separate views to keep the numbers readable.

Questions agencies ask

How long does this take?

Production time is identical for both: minutes per video. The difference is coordination, which grows with the number of clients rather than the number of videos.

What does it cost?

Starter is £49 for 30 finished minutes and one person. Growth is £149 for 120 minutes and three people. Scale is £499 for 480 minutes and ten.

Does the client need an account?

No, in either model. Clients review and pay on links, so seats are only ever needed for the people producing the work.
